Mount Athos
Mount Athos (Hagion Oros) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an autonomous Greek territory, administered by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. Mount Athos consists of 20 Orthodox monasteries and is also known as the Holy Mountain Autonomous Monastic State. It is located in the eastern part of the Halkidiki Peninsula.
Women are not allowed to enter Mount Athos, only men. Monks and visitors alike lead a simple life, and there are no modern facilities in the surrounding area. They eat a small amount of food each day, mostly bread and olives. They stay in cells or caves in the monastery, praying to God and working on the farm.
In addition to a passport, foreign visitors need a letter of recommendation from the embassy in Athens or consulate in Thessaloniki. Another required document is an entry permit from the Church Administration of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens or the Administration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Northern Greek Ministry in Thessaloniki.
